There is a chair at the front of our cafe that faces the window directly. It has slightly more padding than the others. The light hits it at a forgiving angle for most of the day. We do not put it on the floor plan.
Whoever needs it most
The rule, never spoken aloud, is that the window seat belongs to whoever needs it most that morning. The novelist working on their second chapter. The person who has just received bad news on their phone. The grandmother visiting from out of town who wants to watch the bicycles.
“Some chairs are for sitting. This one is for noticing.”
If you are reading this and you have never sat in our window seat, come in on a slow Tuesday. Order a flat white. We will know.
